How to set up your email account in Mozilla Thunderbird ?

What is Thunderbird? 

Mozilla Thunderbird is a free, open-source email client that allows you to manage your emails, contacts, and calendars in one place. It supports multiple accounts, filters, tags, and advanced security settings, giving you full control over your communication.

How to configure your email in Thunderbird 

What you’ll need: 

  • Your email address 
  • Your email password 
  • Incoming and outgoing mail server settings 

Step 1: Launch Thunderbird 

  • Open the Thunderbird application on your computer. 
  • If this is your first account, select Mail when prompted. 
  • If you already have an account, go to the right-hand panel and select New Account → Email

Step 2: Enter your account details 

Fill in the following: 

  • Your name (the display name for sent emails) 
  • Email address (e.g., info@yourdomain.tld
  • Password for the account 

Then click on Configure manually


Step 3: Mail server configuration 

Incoming mail (IMAP or POP) 

  • Protocol: IMAP or POP 
  • Server name:
    • mail-gr.securemail.pro (for Papaki 2.0) 
    • or the domain shown in your Plesk login URL 
  • Port: 993 (IMAP) or 995 (POP) 
  • Connection security: SSL/TLS 
  • Authentication method: Encrypted password 
  • Username: your full email address (e.g. info@yourdomain.tld

Outgoing mail (SMTP) 

  • Server name:
    • smtp-gr.securemail.pro (for Papaki 2.0) 
    • or the domain shown in your Plesk login URL 
  • Port: 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS) 
  • Connection security: SSL/TLS or STARTTLS 
  • Authentication method: Encrypted password 
  • Username: your full email address 

Click Done to complete setup. 


Where to find your mail servers 

If your email is hosted on the Papaki 2.0 control panel: 

  • Incoming mail server: mail-gr.securemail.pro 
  • Outgoing mail server: smtp-gr.securemail.pro 

If hosted on the Plesk environment: 

  • Find the server's name in the browser's address bar when logged into Plesk 
  • Do not include the port :8443 

Additional configuration notes 

  • Recommended secure ports:
    • IMAP: 993 
    • POP: 995 
    • SMTP: 465 
    • Use either Encrypted password or Normal password 
  • If secure ports are not available:
    • IMAP: 143 
    • POP: 110 
    • SMTP: 25 or 587 
    • Use STARTTLS and Encrypted password (mandatory) 

This ensures that your password is not transmitted in plain text, even on non-encrypted connections. 


Additional tips 

  • If you’ve recently changed your domain’s nameservers, full email functionality may take 4 to 48 hours to activate. 
  • You can test access by logging in via

If it works there but not in Thunderbird, the issue is likely with client configuration. 


Common connection issues in Thunderbird 

Incorrect credentials 

  • Wrong email address or password 
  • Username must be the full email address 

Wrong server settings 

  • Incorrect server names, ports, or encryption protocols 

Firewall or antivirus restrictions 

  • Local software might block the connection
  • You may need to allow Thunderbird or open specific ports 

Email provider issues 

  • Temporary mail server outage 
  • IP blocked after multiple failed login attempts 

DNS propagation delay 

  • If you recently changed nameservers, wait up to 48 hours 

Outdated or corrupt Thunderbird configuration 

  • Try removing and re-adding the account 
  • Alternatively, create a new Thunderbird user profile
