How can I add my email account to Gmail (mobile app)

Gmail update starting January 2026

Google has introduced changes to the way external email accounts are connected to Gmail.

As a result:

  • Adding email accounts through Gmail in a web browser (desktop) is no longer supported with synchronization (POP or IMAP)
  • Using Gmail as a mail client for other email accounts is now possible only:
    • ✅ through the Gmail mobile app using IMAP
    • ✅ or through other email clients (e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird)

Learn more on the official Google support page here.

What applies today for using Gmail as a mail client

  • Gmail in a browser (desktop) no longer functions as a client for managing external email accounts
  • External email accounts can only be added via applications that support full synchronization (IMAP)
  • The POP protocol is no longer used in Gmail for importing email from other accounts
